Competency and Librarianship

Most library managers and directors are familiar with the Competency Index for the Library Field, though librarians who’ve not been involved in hiring or managing other staff may not be. Originally published in 2009, and updated in 2014, it’s a useful “tool for defining the competencies – skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors – necessary for library staff” to successfully serve their communities. It’s also a useful way for library professionals and paraprofessionals), and for those thinking about becoming library professionals or paraprofessionals, to take stock of their skills and abilities and seek opportunities for professional growth.
